The Opportunity:
We’re looking for a R&D Chemist to join our R&D team in Burlington. The R&D Lead Chemist will be responsible for all aspects of formulation product development, including formula development, sourcing of new raw materials, sample preparation, costing, and overseeing process scale-up. The R&D Lead Chemist will be expected to work on multiple projects designing experiments to support product development and stability testing. This individual will be expected to work independently with minimal supervision. Beyond the responsibilities of the formulation work, The R&D Chemist is also responsible for the supervision of the R&D Lab and the R&D Chemist that works within the lab. The R&D Chemist will assist in overseeing the project work, along with the R&D Director, of all R&D Chemists. The R&D Chemist will also be responsible for ensuring the lab is properly equipped, training of all R&D Chemists, and being the point person when issues arise with large scale manufacturing.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
· Development of personal care and cosmetic products for the hospitality and retail industries that meet Global environment initiatives and certifications.
· Ability to engineer and develop formulas affording high quality products such as shampoos, conditioners, and lotions.
· Works with production to scale-up laboratory processes for manufacturing in 250 KG to 12,000 KG reactors.
· Acts as the direct contact for Trial Batch runs in manufacturing.
· Performs Stability testing for products to ensure long term performance as per industry standards.
· Works closely with Sales team to develop products that address customers’ specific market needs and expectations.
· Ability to work effectively with QC, Production, and Sales teams to increase sales, ensure quality, and maintain competitive high-quality products.
· Actively looks for new and innovative ways of improving products and processes; focus on increase renewable content in formulas.
· Maintains safe and healthy work environment for all staff by following and enforcing standards and procedures.
Qualifications & Experience:
· BSc in Chemistry, Ch. Eng. or equivalent science degree
· Minimum of 3-5 years of development experience including product development, formulation, innovation, or related roles preferably in a cosmetic manufacturing environment
· It is preferred but not required that the candidate have a strong understanding of environmental certifications like Green Seal, ECOCERT, etc.
· Excellent technical knowledge of chemical products and raw materials relating to their use and functions.
· Ability to work independently and act as a project lead including the ability to organize multiple, complex projects involving various departments and stakeholders both internally and externally
· Demonstrated track record of execution; proven history of taking new products to market
· Experience with regulations and requirements such as cGMP, SOPs, OHS, ISO and NHP would be an asset
· Continuous improvement mindset with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
· Excellent communication, organization, and computer skills
